EAN-13 is the standard 13-digit format used globally for retail product barcodes (the ones on packaged goods), while CODE128 is a flexible alphanumeric format often used for internal inventory tracking, shipping labels and asset tags where the code isn't a registered retail product number.
EAN-13 is a fixed 13-digit numeric format used for globally registered retail products (requires a GS1 registered prefix for real commercial use). CODE128 supports letters, numbers and symbols and is commonly used for internal warehouse, inventory or asset labels that don't need global registration.
