Most Indian families don't overspend on one big thing — money leaks through dozens of small UPI payments, subscriptions and EMIs. A monthly budget makes those leaks visible.
Step 1: Use the 50/30/20 Rule as a Starting Point
| Bucket | Share of take-home pay | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Needs | 50% | Rent/EMI, groceries, electricity, school fees, insurance |
| Wants | 30% | Eating out, shopping, OTT, travel |
| Savings & investments | 20% | Emergency fund, SIP, PPF, EPF top-up |
If you have a home loan or big EMIs, "needs" may be higher — then cut "wants" first, not savings.
Step 2: Build an Emergency Fund
Aim for 3–6 months of essential expenses in a savings account or liquid fund before taking investment risks.
Step 3: Automate Investing With SIP
A SIP (Systematic Investment Plan) invests a fixed amount every month. The power is time: even a small SIP started early can grow meaningfully because returns compound. Returns are not guaranteed — mutual funds carry market risk — so choose funds that match your goals and time horizon.
Step 4: Plan Tax Saving Under Section 80C
Under the old tax regime, Section 80C allows deductions up to ₹1,50,000 a year for items like EPF, PPF, ELSS, life insurance premium, home-loan principal and children's tuition fees. If you are on the new regime, most of these deductions don't apply — check with your CA which regime suits you.
Step 5: Track Net Worth Once a Month
Net worth = what you own (savings, investments, property) − what you owe (loans, card dues). Watching this one number rise is the best motivation to stick to a budget.
